The Abacos are known as a yachter’s paradise! Located in the northern Bahamas, east of southern Florida, the Abacos are ideal for boating and sailing. Great Abaco’s coastline is scalloped with bays, coves, and protected harbors that feature full-service marinas and resorts. The large island also acts like a mainland, with a long string of barrier islands lying off its east coast. In between is the Sea of Abaco, a brilliant-blue body of water that’s shallow and protected but still large enough to offer miles and miles of sailing and exploring fun.
Green Turtle Cay Sailing Club hosted the first 4th of July Race in 1967, which quickly grew to an annual race for locals and visiting yachtsmen. Later in 1974, the Abaco Regatta Syndicate was formed and they organized the first Regatta Time in Abacos in 1976 for traditional Bahamian boats. As the participation of cruisers was on a notable uptick, the popular Green Turtle Cay Race was merged in the summer of 1978. With record numbers of 121 boats joining the event in 1984, the "Mother Tub" race class was created for the many cruising boats. The annual series of races continued through the summer of 2019, until Hurricane Dorian casued massive destruction to the area. Local community rebuilding efforts, plus travel restrictions brought on by the Coronavirus global pandemic, interrupted the racing tradition for several years.
Reborn in 2023 as Regattas in The Abacos, the event returned with great success the same year that sailing was declared the Bahamas National Sport. Mark your calendars to join us for another fantastic racing tour of the Abacos this summer. With older rum, faster boats, and younger spirits, we eagerly anticipate this year's regatta!
